Olympic Observations

Who knew . . . anything about Canada and the Olympics?

I decided last week that I was going to fully embrace and celebrate the winter Olympic games. It's not like I don't already have enough going on and limited time to accomplish everything that I need to do but I am committed to enjoying these games. So to get things started off right I watched the Olympic Opening Ceremony tonight. Wow. Here are some observations . . .
  • 90% of the population of the entire country live within 100 miles of the US/Canadian border.
  • The maple leaf flag came into existence in the 60's. Is it just me or does that seem like not too long ago. I know it's longer than I have been on this earth but still that doesn't seem too long ago.
  • "Figure skaters find their partners online now. Go to iceskatingpartner.com" "You're joking! Right?" Thank you to the commentators that conversation brought on some serious laughter to my life.
  • Curling started in England with the stones coming from Scotland and all along I thought it was the Canadians that came up with the sport. However if you check Wikipedia it apparently originated in Scotland. Either way, it didn't start in Canada but they sure do like it up there and I for one do not understand the fun of it.
  • I had no idea fidddle music was such an inherent part of the Canadian Culture. Let's not forget to include kilts and tap dancing to that too. Still not sure I buy this.
  • I will never be able to watch another opening ceremony without DVR. I have been spoiled and can never go back.
  • I do not understand how South America has never won a medal in the winter Olympics. Chile has mountains that we ski on in our summer, their winter. How is it possible they haven't won a medal?
  • I am the same height and weight as Lindsey Vonn, US ladies skier. Then why do I look like I do and she looks like she does? I won't even attempt to sport the bathing suit (lack there of) or spandex racing suits you see her wearing on tv and in magazines. Nope, it's just not going to happen.
  • I want to go to Russia in 2014 and participate in the next winter Olympics. In what capacity? I have no idea but I want to go. If you have any suggestions or any contacts which will help me get there please let me know. (The likelyhood of this happening is right up there with me getting a Labradoodle dog sometime this year - but it's fun to dream).
More Olympic observations to come I hope!

Ha, ha! You forgot to mention the weird people dancing as the athletes came out of the tunnel. What was up with that?

Too funny. I actually thought of you when they were interviewing Lindsey Vonn before the opening ceremony started. For some reason, she reminded me of you!
