Who knew . . . they were leaving the Rockefeller Christmas tree up until my grandma Honey celebrates her birthday on February 9th?
It is now January 8th and the Christmas tree is still standing tall in Rockefeller Center. I thought by now the tree would have magically disappeared over night just as it appeared two months ago. I wonder how long this final icon of holiday celebration will last? All the overside ornaments, soldiers, and other decorations are gone. The Christmas markets are closed and cleaned up. The store window displays feature coats and scarves rather then Christmas dresses and gifts. The lights on the trees and buildings are turned off, and the over abundance of tourists have gone home. Well, let's be honest, TimesSquare is still ablaze with advertisements and billboards and packed with tourists.
As I walked to the subway this evening on my way home from work I was shocked to see the tree standing there sparkling and shining just as it has through the Christmas season. I decided it should be left on display until February 9th in honor of a request my grandmother made of her mother a few years ago. That is right, my great grandmother spoiled her child by keeping the real christmas trees (I assume artificial trees were not on the market then) in their home until Honey's birthday, weeks after Christmas. Could you imagine? Were there any needles remaining on the branches? Did the entire tree turn brown? And could you imagine what the Rockefeller tree would look like in a month? I would guess it is 40 times the size of Honey's christmas tree. There would be mountains of needles. It would most likely become a fire hazard. And I don't think the guys standing around waiting to take and sell the tourists pictures of themselves in front of the tree would be making money.
Tomorrow I will walk by the tree again and take a moment and pretend it is February 9th because I don't think I have enough clout and persuasion to convince the powers that be to keep the tree up for four more weeks.
Happy Birthday a month early Honey!
(P.S. The picture was taken with my camera phone, not too shabby if I do say so myself)

It's totally amazing to me that they can even make a giant tree like that stand up, let alone stay alive for over a month! I say after all the work it takes to get it there (and all of the years the tree has grown on its own in a forest somewhere only to be cut down for a big display) Keep it up as long as it will live!! lol.
I didn't mean you when I was talking about blog banners. I'll eventually get around to making you one. It's hard b/c I do cute and your blog is not supposed to be cute--kind of a design challenge. Don't worry I'm up for it!
Ok, if you have a blog, you have to post more than once every two weeks! Don't you know that I depend on people like you to help me waste my day away on the internet??
