Jump the shark

Who knew. . . what "jump the shark" meant?

My friend Tracy knew that is who and I was quite impressed.

According to both Tracy and word for word from the urban dictionary:

A term to describe a moment when somethin that was once great has reached a point where it will now decline in quality and popularity.

Origin of this phrase comes from a Happy Days episode where the Fonz jumped a shark on waterskis. Thus was labeled the lowest point of the show.

How did all this come about?  I was surfing the internet reading random business websites and articles as part of my new work routine in hopes to find gems of wisdom or ideas for interesting content for future meeting agendas when I came up on the phrase "jumped the shark".  The article was regarding Starbuck's test run with $1 small cups of coffee called shorts.  The reporter was questioning whether or not Starbucks is selling out in competing with chains like McDonalds and Dunkin Doughnuts, that they are out of ideas, or grown too big for their original business model and brand.  He wrote "Has Starbucks jumped the shark?".  When I read this I had a flash back to a moment a couple weeks ago when Tracy was telling us about the tv show recaps she loves to read. She said that this phrase kept coming up so she looked it up.  Of course because it had something to do with waterskiing it immediately stuck in my brain.  I emailed her and she emailed me right back with the answer - Tracy is so smart because she knew.  Did you know this?

Never heard the phrase before, but I do remember the episode of Happy Days… The Fonz was so cool.
