So close but so far

Who knew . . . I would run so hard, get so close, set a PR but yet still be 56 seconds away from my goal?

This weekend I ran in the NYC Half Marathon. As you can see from the map the race loops around Central Park, down 7th Ave through Time Square and then down the West Side Highway to BatteryPark (the park where you catch the ferry to Staten, Liberty, Ellis Island for all you tourists). My goal was to see if I could run it under 1 hr and 50 minutes beating my best time set during the SunTrust National Half Marathon two years ago in DC (1:53:35).

My time: 1hr 50 min, 55 seconds

Blah, blah, blah what does this all mean to you? Not much, but to me it means I know I can improve my time with the following:
  1. a little more training - which means any training is a step up from my current non-existent training plans.
  2. better weather - 74 degrees and sunny wasn't the problem it was the 74% humidity that was difficult to run in
  3. the course - usually I don't scout out the course before I run the race and just follow the crowd. Because this race was on my turf I know exactly where the curves, hills, and straight aways were and what to expect. The jurry is still out on which approach I like better.

Eventhough I was off by 56 seconds I still set a PR and felt good running the race. So good job good job to me.

P.S.

The woman that won the race (Paula Radcliff) finished in 1hr 9min but then again she is a machine and her life is dedicated to running where I am not a machine and I have a few other pursuits in life than running. Oh well, maybe I will win the race next year. :)

Who knew at Ricks College that you would be running through the streets of New York. Mark Durham came to town and was showing a blog of Rachel's and yours came up. Looks like life is good. I wanted to say hi as it has been a while. Congrats on your race and setting your personal best.
